Understanding and Treating Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a widespread issue, but that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with. Losing control of your bladder can be messy and uncomfortable, no matter the circumstances. Older adults are the most likely to experience urinary incontinence, but it also occurs in pregnant women and in people of all ages.

Fortunately, many products can improve the quality of life for people with urinary incontinence. Here at Juro’s Pharmacy Health & Wellness, we carry adult diapers in a range of sizes. These products are made with soft, comfortable materials that can absorb large amounts of urine while keeping the outer layers clean and dry.

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence can occur in several different ways:

  • Urge incontinence: This type of incontinence presents as a strong, sudden urge to urinate, usually followed by involuntary urination. Urge incontinence can be caused by acute conditions, such as urinary tract infections, or by chronic conditions, such as diabetes and various neurological disorders.
  • Stress incontinence: In stress incontinence, involuntary urination is caused by sudden pressure on the bladder. Stress incontinence can be triggered by laughing, sneezing, coughing, and physical activity. Risk factors for stress incontinence include pregnancy, menopause, diabetes, and nerve injuries to the pelvis or lower back.
  • Overflow incontinence: Overflow incontinence is the constant or frequent leaking of urine from a bladder that does not drain completely (also known as chronic urinary retention). This can result from a blockage in the urinary tract, a weakness in the muscle that expels urine from the bladder (called the detrusor), and various nerve conditions.
  • Functional incontinence: This type of incontinence occurs when a physical or mental impairment prevents you from reaching the bathroom in time, causing the bladder to overflow. Overactive or weak bladder muscles are often linked to functional incontinence. However, this condition can also result from nerve damage.
  • Mixed incontinence: Mixed incontinence usually refers to a combination of urge incontinence and stress incontinence, which is very common in older adults.

Causes

Urinary incontinence can have many different causes. Sometimes, incontinence results from an acute condition, such as a urinary tract infection or a vaginal infection. Conditions like these are curable, and when the underlying condition has cleared up, the incontinence will improve.

Incontinence can also occur after a surgical procedure, particularly one that involves the pelvic floor. In most cases, the incontinence will improve after the recovery period.

There are also many chronic conditions that can lead to incontinence, such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. In these cases, the incontinence may be persistent and incurable, but it can be treated and managed with lifestyle interventions.

Treatment Options

While urinary incontinence can’t always be prevented or cured, there are ways to manage it. Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor are often recommended to people who have given birth to reduce postpartum incontinence. These exercises can benefit anyone who experiences stress incontinence, which can be related to weak pelvic muscles.

A high-fiber diet may also prove beneficial. Because constipation can put excess pressure on the bladder, it’s important to keep the bowels in motion. Consider eating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, or adding a fiber supplement to your daily routine.

If you are dealing with urinary incontinence, make sure to discuss the options with your doctor before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle. They can recommend a personalized treatment approach that will target the cause of your incontinence.
