What is Veterinary Compounding?

By definition, veterinary compounding is the manipulation of any drug beyond what is listed on the label. For example, compounding might include combining, mixing, diluting, flavoring, or concentrating a medication to change the dosage form.

A veterinarian may work with a client to determine a solution for easier administration of the patient’s medications.

Why Do You Need Veterinary Compounding?

Veterinary compounding can be necessary when an animal is difficult to medicate, when a unique medical result is needed, or to minimize the amount of medication administration necessary.

Compounding should only be approved by a licensed veterinarian and instructions should be detailed and followed exactly.

Forms of Compounded Medications

Compounded medications for veterinary use can come in various forms to suit the specific needs of the animal. These forms include flavored oral suspensions or solutions, chewable treats, transdermal gels or creams, and even injectables. Each form is tailored to make medication administration easier for the pet and can be customized based on the animal's needs and health requirements.
